Medical travel complication cover: who pays if something goes wrong
Most travel insurance excludes treatment abroad. Here is how to close the gap before you book surgery overseas.
Standard travel insurance excludes treatment you travelled to receive. Complication cover is a separate product and most people only discover that after the fact.
What standard policies exclude
Elective surgery abroad, pre-existing conditions, and complications of treatment you travelled for are routinely excluded. Read the exclusion list, not the headline.
What complication cover does
Specialist medical-travel policies cover revision surgery, extended stays and medical repatriation following a complication. Confirm the cap and the definition of complication.
Ask the clinic
Some clinics bundle a complication warranty. Check what it covers, where it is honoured, and for how long after discharge.
Keep the paper trail
Retain the itemised quote, the consent form and the discharge notes. You will need all three for any later claim.
The Medical Travel track's insurance step covers this before you book.
