The skilled work visa checklist that actually gets you approved (2026)
The seven documents officials actually want to see, in order, with the three steps most applicants get wrong.
A skilled work visa is rarely refused on the merits. It is refused because a document is missing, undated, untranslated or not apostilled. Here is the order that actually works.
1. Confirm the role is eligible
Before you spend a cent, confirm your occupation is on the destination country's shortage or eligible list, and that your qualifications map to it. A job title is not an occupation code.
2. Secure a compliant offer
Your employer must hold a valid sponsor licence and issue a certificate of sponsorship. Ask for the sponsor licence number before you resign from your current role.
3. Book language and credential evidence early
Approved language tests and credential evaluations have waiting lists. Book them before you file, not after.
4. Gather civil documents — apostilled and translated
Passport, birth and marriage certificates, police clearances. Most refusals we see come from this step: an expired police certificate or a translation that was not certified.
5. Prove maintenance funds
Bank statements covering the required period, or an employer maintenance certificate. The funds must be held continuously — a sudden deposit triggers scrutiny.
6. File and attend biometrics
File online, pay the fee and health surcharge, then attend biometrics. Keep the appointment letter — you will need it at the border.
7. Land and register
Register your address, obtain a tax number and collect your residence card within the deadline. Miss it and your status can lapse before it begins.
