Surrogacy exit documents: bringing your child home without getting stranded
Birth certificate, passport, immigration permission — the final mile of surrogacy is where most international journeys break down.
The birth is the joyful part. The paperwork that follows is where international surrogacy journeys most often get stranded abroad.
Birth certificate
Confirm whose names go on the birth certificate in the country of birth. In some jurisdictions the surrogate appears until a court order replaces her.
Parentage order
A pre-birth or post-birth parentage order establishes your legal parentage. Without it, you may not be recognised as the parent for travel purposes.
Passport for the child
Your home country may not issue a passport to a child born abroad to a surrogate until parentage is recognised at home. This can take weeks.
Immigration permission to leave
Some countries require explicit exit permission for a child born through surrogacy. This is separate from the passport.
Plan the order
Birth certificate, parentage order, passport, exit permission. Each depends on the one before it.
The premium Vault's exit-documents checklist covers this by destination country.
